Shh! We have a plan

4 characters standing in line from tallest to smallest

Four goofy adventurers are out in the woods trying to catch a radiantly coloured bird.

“Hello birdie”, greets the littlest hunter cheerfully and is instantly shushed by the other three “Shh! We have a plan.” The group tiptoe forward but fall over each other while the bird gracefully sails off. All following attempts consistently fail until the littlest, a quiet spectator up until now, takes a different approach with unexpected results.

This story is a great starting point for exploring the concept of sizes and numbers. Encourage the children to build a queue with the tallest at the front and the littlest at the end all facing one direction. Let the children count their position, starting from front to back. Now ask the children to turn around and face the opposite direction. Let each child count their position, starting from front to back. What has changed? Why is the littlest child now number 1?
