Ten little pirates

Ten little pirates - book cover

Ahoy, me hearties!
Hope you’ve had a fearless Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Embrace the spirit of the day by immersing yourself into the perilous world of the ten little pirates, who disappear one by one, only to be reunited on a desert island. Beyond the obvious STEM-relevant counting backwards from ten, which helps children develop an understanding for the size of each number in relation to other numbers, there is a wealth of discussion points in this story, such as different weather phenomena and dangerous animals at sea.

You can look into cause and effect – What exactly does the hurricane do to the pirate? – and venture into the world of acoustics by creating some of the sound effects from the story. How do you make a good ‘chomp’ or ‘sploosh’? The children could also investigate how to build a good pirate ship, how to prevent it from sinking and how they would need to build the boat to carry a lot of treasure.
