The book with no pictures

Celebrating children’s appreciation of nonsense and giving them the power to make adults say silly things, The Book With No Pictures bravely leaves the realm of the picture book behind and focuses on sound instead. While the children will enjoy any adult stumbling their way through “Glurr-ga-wocko ma rumoh-a-doo AiiEE! AiiEE! AiiEE!”, they will also notice how every reader puts a different spin on it and how their voices vary in tone, volume and pitch. You could ask the children to repeat the sounds in as many different ways as they can think of.
What else do the children experience with their eyes and their ears? Can they recognise sounds with their eyes closed? What would it be like to listen to their favourite TV show without seeing the pictures? Encourage the children to investigate how their lives would be different if their hearing or their vision was impaired. How would they communicate if they couldn’t hear? How would they engage with a book if they couldn’t see?
With our book recommendations, we want to spark an interest in children to discover STEM in their everyday lives. Most books go beyond the obvious STEM connections and can be a great starting point for exploring children’s questions and ideas further.
