Although it may seem a bit of an unusual choice compared with the books we have introduced so far as a gateway for discovering STEM in the everyday with younger children, we did not want you to miss out on this wonderfully illustrated story about the relationship between the bobtail squid and the bacteria that make it glow in the dark.
Just like any other book, this story can lead to many different explorations. It could get the children thinking and talking about symbioses they can observe or experience in their everyday lives and even inside their own bodies. They might want to research other interesting facts about sea animals or find out more about animal communication. How can you communicate without language? What do bacteria do to help people? Why are some organisms very small and some very big?
With our book recommendations, we want to spark an interest in children to discover STEM in their everyday lives. Most books go beyond the obvious STEM connections and can be a great starting point for exploring children’s questions and ideas further.
