Connecting with First Nations Knowledge in Early STEM

Embedding First Nations perspectives into early STEM education requires respectful, culturally safe practices grounded in authentic relationships with First Nations people.  

While this process can be challenging for many services, it’s also an opportunity for growth and meaningful connection. This STEM Hour recording will support you by exploring the insights and experiences of two non-First Nations educators who are already on this journey.

Sue Caldicott is the Director of Stirling District Kindergarten (SA), the 2023 Winner of the Narragunnawali Reconciliation in Education Awards, which recognises early learning services and schools implementing outstanding reconciliation initiatives. Sue is passionate about the opportunities within Bush Kinder to learn about Country and, being on Kaurna Native Title Land, has overseen a strong Kaurna focus within SDK’s teaching and learning. Sue is also a former STEM project officer at the SA Department of Education. 

Jess Shaw is a consultant and facilitator at Gowrie SA with over a decade of experience in early childhood education. She supports non-First Nations educators to embed First Nations perspectives through respectful, place-based approaches. Jess co-facilitates the Yellaka Warra Kaurna language and culture series with Elder Uncle Tamaru Smith and co-facilitates training on cultural competence, Acknowledgements of Country, and Kaurna protocols. Her work empowers educators to build authentic relationships with culture and community and engage meaningfully in reconciliation through everyday practice.

• How they formed meaningful relationships with local First Nations communities and Elders.
