Decoding Nature’s Hidden Patterns & Maths in Early STEM

What do broccoli, clouds, snowflakes, ferns, and our lungs have in common? Why is the Fibonacci sequence so important in our lives? In the lead up to National Science Week 2025, we explored the theme “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language” within the context of early childhood education.

In this two-hour workshop recording, educators learn about hidden languages present in nature (and the Universe!) and gain practical ideas for how to transform this knowledge into exciting learning opportunities for young children. In this recording, educators learn to extend children’s mathematical abilities by: 

• Playing with basic mathematical sequences. 
• Observing, examining, and recreating patterns in the nature world. 
• Exploring fractals (never-ending, complex geometric shapes found in nature). 
• Developing an understanding of scale and self-similarity in nature, both foundational concepts in math and early science. 

This workshop also delves into this topic though visual arts (the A in STEAM), making it an excellent workshop for educators wanting to connect their STEM teaching with visual arts learning experiences.
