Exploring STEM Through the Noongar Six Seasons

What can the flowering of plants, a shift in the wind, or changes in animals tell us about the arrival of a new season? 

For thousands of years, Noongar people of south-west Western Australia have carefully observed these natural indicators to understand seasonal change on Country. Unlike the four-season European calendar, the Noongar people recognise six distinct seasons, each identified through patterns in plants, animals, weather, and environmental change. 

In this special STEM Hour, Noongar cultural educator Cyril Yarran — founder of Milliyaan Aboriginal Services — introduces the Noongar Six Seasons and shares how this long-standing knowledge system can support young children to understand seasonal change through close observation of Country.  

Educators will explore how noticing patterns in nature, asking questions about change, and predicting seasonal shifts can inspire STEM investigations in early childhood settings, while also building confidence in culturally responsive practice that moves beyond one-off celebrations toward authentic, place-based learning that strengthens children’s connection to Country.
